“Every day priests minutely examine the Dharma
And endlessly chant complicated sutras.
Before doing that, though, they should learn
How to read the love letters sent by the wind
And rain, the snow and moon.”

“Meditation, simply defined, is a way of being aware. It is the happy marriage of doing and being. It lifts the fog of our ordinary lives to reveal what is hidden; it loosens the knot of self-centeredness and opens the heart; it moves us beyond mere concepts to allow for a direct experience of reality. Meditation embodies the way of awakening: both the path and its fruition. From one point of view, it is the means to awakening; from another, it is awakening itself.” —Lama Surya Das, from “The Heart Essence of Buddhist Meditation” via Tricycle Daily Dharma (via sharanam)

“Through meditation practice, we realize that we don’t have to obscure the joy and openness that is present in every moment of our existence. We can awaken to basic goodness, our birthright. When we are able to do this, we no longer feel burdened by depression, worry, or resentment. Life feels spacious, like the sky and the sea. There’s room to relax and breathe and swim, to swim so far out that we no longer have the reference point of the shore.” —Three Methods for Working with Uncertainty by Pema Chödrön

“The blossom that opens in the morning is scattered by the evening breeze, and the dew, condensed in hours of darkness before dawn, is dispelled by the rays of the morning sun. Heedless or willfully ignorant of this procession of changes, we dream of prosperity all through life and, without understanding the nature of transience, hope for longevity. All the while, across the face of the earth moves the restless wind of impermanence, dissolving all that it touches.” —Hōnen (法然 1133-1212) (via sahaworld) (via skydharma) (via sharanam) (via fuckyeahdukkha)

“When you feel that you are a lonely, put-upon, isolated little stranger confronting all this, you are under the influence of an illusory feeling, because the truth is quite the reverse. You are the whole works, all that there is, and always was, and always has been, and always will be.” —

Zen is simple → kwanumzen.com

mnmal:

Linc just said, “Zen is very simple. Dishwashing time, just wash dishes; sitting time, just sit; driving time, just drive; talking time, just talk; walking time, just walk.” That’s all. Not special. But that is very difficult. That is absolutes thinking. When you’re doing something, just do it. No opposites. No subject, no object. No inside, no outside. Outside and inside become one. That’s called absolutes.

“Baby brackens make friendly bows
To the clouds,
And fragrant herbs thicken
After rain.
I take a basket and leave the temple
At my leisure,
I pick brackens and herbs
To ward off hunger.”
